Its inspired colour use transcends its impermanence, deftly striking the balance between offsetting the displayed work in an original fashion without overwhelming it or avoiding any statement at all. The architectural strategy involved creating a topographic array of modular platforms, which individually support the ceramic works and undulate as a whole through the five galleries of the Campbelltown Arts Centre. Critical to its success is the saturated use of colour in a palette derived from Draper’s works – not mimicking them precisely but subtly picking up on details to establish a fine connection between the backdrop and the focus. There are moments of intensity, immersion and surprise across the gallery spaces, all steeping the visitor in the artist’s accomplishments. The execution is clear and this beautiful colour concept shines as an atmospheric antidote to the black box/white plinth exhibition stereotype, embodying what this awards program stands for and offering lessons for interiors of all types.
Explore how the winners brought to life the innovative use of colour in residential, commercial and public spaces.
