Colour tips for renters
Adding colour can be a great way to customise your home, but renters can feel unsure of what they can do without the property owner’s permission. To show how impactful colour can be, Dulux colour forecaster and stylist, Bree Leech undertook a room makeover in her own rental property using colours from the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast. Colours featured: Dulux Lakeside and Dulux Huntly.
Colour scheming
When selecting your colour scheme, having an overall mood or style in mind can help you to narrow down your selections and bring an idea to life. It’s a good idea to create a visual you can refer to like a mood board, materials board or Pinterest board to help keep your colour scheme cohesive.
A mood board also doubles as a reference point to help work out your proportions, which can dramatically change the mood of the space.
Get creative
Going bold with colour can pay off, but if your options are limited, small changes can make a big difference, too. Remember, colour is not just for walls! If you want to introduce smaller pops of colour, painting dining chairs or a table can be a great place to start.
Or, if you’re working with shelving that has a backboard, paint a contrasting colour behind the shelves to help decorative items can stand out.
Tonal effects
Working with existing fittings and fixtures can lead to a clash in colours, so it’s important to consider the bigger picture. While you may not be able to pull up the carpet or replace the kitchen benchtop, you can always add rugs for a tonal effect to get you closer to your desired palette.

Selections shortlist
For colour surety, test your shortlist by ordering up to three free A4 sample sheets from the Dulux Colour Shop or paint a cardboard slip or piece of paper and leave the painted swatch up on the walls for a few days.
Move it around the room at different times of the day to ensure you love the colours under different lighting conditions – both natural and artificial.
