What is a mood board?

A mood board is a collection of photos, cut-outs, colours, textures and elements that represent what you like and want to explore in your next project.

It can be physical or digital, and can be used to test out ideas, and thought starters, and explore how things will go together in your new space.

The beauty of creating a mood board is that it’s personal to you and your project.

It’s your space to play, test, and explore to find your perfect fit. Here’s how you can get started on making one of your own.

Step 1: Gather inspiration

Clear your space, grab your scissors, and a glue stick and start your research!

Build the foundation of your mood board with cut-outs from magazines, fabric swatches and colour samples that grab your eye.

Think about elements like popular styling trends, colour schemes, furniture or decorative items, textures like carpets, timber flooring or tiles, as well as decor like artwork, vases and plants.

Get inspiration from your favourite home magazines, blogs, interior design websites, as well as brands on social media.

Don’t forget to check out our Pinterest and Instagram for more great ideas!

Step 2: Refine your style

Once you’re good to go with all of your inspiration, start to refine your styling and colour choices.

Look at what you’ve gathered to see where there are similarities or repetition — these will form your favourite selections.

Choose carefully but choose with your heart! It’s your space to decorate with your favourite things.

Step 3: Set your vision

When your direction has become clear, it’s time to bring it all together. Set your inspiration out on a large piece of paper, a Pinterest board, or similar.

This is your ultimate reference point to look back on throughout the creative process of your project.

Keep note of the names of colours, the types of finishes, or any decor styling that stands out for when it’s time to hit the shops.

You can also start ordering colour samples and stickers to see how they look in your space.

Step 4: Start creating!

With your vision locked down, you’re ready to start your project!

If your project involves third parties like designers, builders or contractors, you can use your mood board as a helpful way to explain your vision and keep things on track.

If it’s a DIY project, when out shopping, bring your mood board with you or a photo of it on your phone to help you make choices that will fit the overall look.
