This year Dulux celebrate 85 years manufacturing right here in New Zealand. Dulux opened our first New Zealand manufacturing plant in Gracefield, Lower Hutt in 1939. Just as trends and fashions have changed over the years, so too have we.
Making great paint in New Zealand since 1939
Dulux opened its first New Zealand manufacturing plant in Gracefield, Lower Hutt in 1939. Since then, hundreds of water-based paint and coating products have been produced and distributed throughout New Zealand. For 85 years Dulux has helped protect, maintain and enhance the spaces and places where Kiwis live, work and play. While it is synonymous with creating better homes, Dulux also plays a critical role in creating and improving the infrastructure we see across New Zealand, every day.
Dulux Powder Coatings have adorned many New Zealand landmarks, including Westpac Stadium and Clyde Quay in Wellington, and Sky City in Auckland. The Dulux team has also gone to extreme lengths to help restore the original paintwork of Hillary’s Hut in Scott Base Antarctica; from carefully stripping the outer paint layers to reveal the original colours and working to create exact Dulux colour matches.
Leading the way
With a heritage dating back 85 years, Dulux has continued to lead the ever-changing waves of fashion and taste. In the 30s, simplicity was the order of the day; the 60s were all about freedom of expression with bright yellows and bold reds, and during the 80s people favoured more neutral hues.
In more recent years, the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range has captured the imaginations of home renovators, specifiers and professional painters. The range contains over 1,000 colours inspired by the unique landscapes and urban across our beautiful country. The range includes unique colours designed to work well in Kiwi homes.
Giving back to the community
Dulux has partnered with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to help protect and promote the Heritage Huts along the walking and trekking trails throughout New Zealand. DOC’s network encompasses over 900 iconic huts and lodges, some of which are historically listed. Dulux provides technical know-how, where required, and expert colour advice for the scheme – creating natural colour palettes inspired by the coast, tussock lands, forest ranges, sun plains and mountain-top scenery.
At a more grassroots level, Dulux also donates paint and accessories to community fundraising programmes such as Habitat for Humanity Homes, community centres, local sports clubs, schools and kindergartens.
Still inspiring and transforming after 85 years
Throughout the years, Dulux has built a reputation for being first-to-market with new and innovative products. Today, the Dulux Group manufactures and markets some of New Zealand’s most iconic brands, including Dulux, British Paints and Cabot’s. It employs over 500 people across New Zealand and manufactures all water-based products locally while operating 29 Dulux Trade Centres across the country. Our history in Aotearoa is long and we hope our future is as well.
New Zealand has been good to us; it’s important for us to return the favour. Dulux and the Department of Conservation are working together to protect iconic DOC huts for future generations to enjoy.
