Frequently asked questions

New concrete must be cured for a minimum of 28 days before performing any etching processes

All products except Dulux Concrete & Paving Clear Protective Sealer are water-based.

Due to the different natures of the surfaces, they each need to be cleaned in a specific way to ensure an effective cleaning process. For bare concrete and paving, it is important to etch the surface with Dulux Concrete & Paving Bare Concrete Etch & Clean prior to priming. This will remove the laitance layer present on the surface of new and aged concrete and roughen the surface to provide a key for paint. A sealed surface doesn’t require etching but is still likely to be contaminated with dirt, oil and grease.

Watch the handy how to video to test if your surface is bare or sealed here.

Concrete should be in good condition and should not show signs of any loose, chipped, or cracked concrete. For best results, remove all loose material and dust and repair damaged areas before you coat.

No. Only bare concrete and concrete-based paver surfaces need to be etched.

No. It must be pressure cleaned at a minimum of 1200 PSI.

Dulux Concrete & Paving Bare Concrete Etch and Clean reacts very quickly with any concrete contaminants, so the runoff from the etching process should not contain materials that will cause harm to plants or grass.

Dulux designed specific primers for bare and for sealed surfaces. This is because bare and sealed surfaces provide different challenges in obtaining a secure level of adhesion for a topcoat. The primers have properties that maximise the potential to bond to the existing surface and present a new surface that is easy for the topcoats to form a secure bond.

Dulux Concrete & Paving Bare Concrete Primer is designed as a penetrating primer that will enter the concrete surface and help bind it to a depth where there is improved strength in the concrete matrix.

Dulux Concrete & Paving Sealed Surface Primer will adhere to previously applied coatings and provide well-bonded adhesion on most previously coated surfaces. It is a water-based product into which an adhesion-promoting additive is mixed. The primer is lightly coloured (blue) and has a three-day pot life after mixing in the additive.

No, Dulux Concrete & Paving Bare Concrete Primer does not have the ability to make a secure bond on sealed surfaces. Use the Dulux Concrete & Paving Sealed Surface Primer on sealed surfaces.

Dulux Concrete & Paving Coloured Sealer Topcoat is tintable to many Dulux Colours of New Zealand colours.

Dulux Concrete & Paving Super Grip is available in a specific range of colours within the medium base.

Explore our wide range of colours for Dulux Concrete & Paving.

No, you cannot coat a solvent-based product on top of a water-based product and vice versa.

Most Dulux Concrete & Paving coating installations will be dry enough for light foot traffic within 24 hours of the final coat being applied. Note that most of the Dulux Concrete & Paving products have recoat times of one to two hours.

For coatings designed for vehicular traffic leave the coating for a minimum of seven days before driving or parking on the coating.

Dulux Concrete & Paving water-based topcoats are slip-rated P4, except Dulux Concrete & Paving Super Grip, this is slip-rated P5. They can be used on slopes up to 1:8 gradient or a 7° angle. If you are unsure of your slope, there are phone apps available that can assist you to work it out.

The Dulux Concrete & Paving Clear Protective Sealer requires the use of the Dulux Concrete & Paving Anti-Slip Additive for P4 slip resistance. The protective sealer should not be used without the addition of the anti-slip additive. Even with the additive, it should not be used on slopes steeper than 1:8 or a 7% angle.

For slopes greater than 1:8 or 7° please call Dulux Customer Services on 0800 800 424 for further assistance. Such slopes will generally require a professional applicator to complete the job.

You can download a free angle measurement app from the relevant app store to discern your gradient.

Yes. All Dulux Concrete & Paving products can be used around pools. The Dulux Concrete & Paving Clear Protective Sealer must be made slip-resistant through the addition of Dulux Concrete & Paving Anti-Slip Additive in all areas especially around a pool.

Dulux Concrete & Paving Bare Concrete Etch & Clean product is organic and biodegradable, therefore, it will not cause harm to lawns and grass.

Our friendly Customer Service team can help you with exactly what you need. Call 0800 800 424 and speak to one of our team members or submit an enquiry via our online form.
