'Jelly Beans & me' Dulux Toy Dog Recall NZ Q&A

Which Dulux Dogs are affected?
The plush toy dogs that were given away with the 'Jelly Beans & me' promotion with any purchase of either a 10 litre pail or two 4 litre cans of premium paint.

The toys were supplied nationally through paint and hardware retailers between 15th February 2012 and 9th March 2012.

Why is Dulux recalling the Dulux Dog?
Dulux New Zealand is voluntarily recalling this product because we have been alerted that some of the fur may come away when pulled, sucked or chewed and may pose a choking or inhalation hazard for children under 3 years of age. While we are not required to undertake this recall, in the interests of safety, we would rather be cautious.

Has a child been injured from playing with the dog?
No, we are not aware that any child has been injured as a result of playing with the toy dog.  We have been alerted that one little boy did become distressed when some of the fur came away in his mouth. We very much thank the boy's parents for bringing their concerns to our attention and are truly sorry that this has happened. We are happy to recall the dogs to alleviate any further concern.

What tests did Dulux do to make sure that the toy dog was safe before releasing it to the public?
We ensured that these dogs were tested by the manufacturer and certified as meeting the New Zealand and Australian safety standard ((AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2002) for soft toys for children who are less than 36 months old. We made sure that we had those signed assurances before releasing the dogs to the public.  These standards specifically exclude the requirement for toy fur to be tension tested to see whether fur will 'come away' from the toy.
However, there was an amendment to only the New Zealand regulations which means that a more stringent or forceful tension test is required in regard to assessing fur which may come away from a plush toy.  Neither Dulux nor our manufacturers were aware of this extra requirement. This is our mistake and we are truly sorry for it.
We are working with our manufacturer to ensure that our toys dogs now fully meet the New Zealand testing requirements and are tested by an accredited tester.

Is the dog dangerous to my child?
We have been alerted that some of the fur may come away when pulled, sucked or chewed and may pose a choking or inhalation hazard for children under 3 years of age. There have been no reports of injury but, in the interests of safety, we would rather be cautious.  So, we'd like you to return the dog to us and we will provide you with a replacement dog or equivalent as soon as possible. Please note that the dog's fur is not toxic.

Is the dog fur toxic?
No. The fur is not toxic.

Are the Jelly Beans safe to eat?
Yes. There is no problem with the jelly beans.
