Waiheke Bach

Peta Tearle Colour and Design Studio

Residential Interior Category Finalist

Project Description:

This small and simple weekend retreat - which lays nestled in a setting of trees and ferns down a steep shady path in Blackpool on Waiheke Island - was designed with major budget restraints in mind.

For the interior of the property, the client wanted to include their 'scrapwood' and recycled timber flooring, which they lovingly saved from a city warehouse loft space in 1996. They also wanted to showcase their 'retro' furniture and various other treasures, which they had collected from junk shops and garage sales over a number of years.

Demonstrating the clients' appreciation for the beauty of their surroundings and the earth's natural materials, the interior features surfaces such as slate, clear finished plywood and stained timber. In true Kiwi do-it-yourself style, the clients undertook the painting, staining and the oiling of the floors themselves.

A simple scheme of light and airy colours dominate the interior of the home, and are used to reflect the 'airy space' above the trees, with dense and earthy colours used as accents, emulating colours found in the bush. The colour scheme and décor is kept simple throughout the home and is deliberately underplayed, allowing the surrounding trees to star as the focal point.
